Dr. Burns has been an Accounting faculty member for more than 25 years at three large state universities. In addition to teaching, Dr. Burns has served in numerous administrative roles at the University of Missouri Columbia (MU) and the University of Colorado Boulder (CU). These roles include: Director of Executive Education, Associate Dean for Academic Programs, Director of the MS Accounting Program, and Faculty Director of AACSB Accreditation at CU and Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Programs and Co-Director of AACSB Accreditation at MU. She completed a faculty internship in the five largest Denver accounting firms during 2008.
Dr. Burns served as Chair of the Pedagogy Task Force for the Pathways Commission, a joint project of the American Accounting Association (AAA) and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) to develop the future of higher education in accounting, from 2013-2015. As Chair, Dr. Burns has coordinated white papers on recommendations and made numerous presentations at regional and national meetings.
Dr. Burns is currently the owner/consultant of Creative Action Learning Solutions, LLC, a higher education consulting and executive training firm and teaches accounting part-time at the University of Colorado Boulder. Higher education projects at large public, small private and urban business schools include AACSB accreditation, undergraduate business program review, curriculum development and review, recommendations on college structure, and managing advisory boards/donor relations. Dr. Burns has designed and facilitated custom executive education programs for Boeing, Crestone Capital, Deloitte, KPMG, Molson Coors, DigitalGlobe, Vail Resorts, Western Union, White Wave Foods, Zayo, as well as teaching in the open enrollment program, Finance and Accounting for Non-Financial Executives (FANE). She has taught accounting, strategy and operations, and corporate social responsibility in CU Business Intensive Certificate (CUBIC) Program for non-business students/recent graduates for five years.
Dr. Burns has received 15 local, state, regional and national awards for teaching and applied research at three different universities including the American Accounting Association’s Innovation in Accounting Education Award, the Frascona Teaching Award and was recently inducted into the Teaching Learning and Curriculum Hall of Honor for the American Accounting Association. She is on the editorial review boards for The Journal of Accounting Education, Advances in Accounting Education, and Issues in Accounting Education.
Dr. Burns received BS in Applied Science from Miami University (Ohio), an MBA from Xavier University (Ohio), and a PhD from New Mexico State University. She is a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in Colorado, Missouri and New Mexico. Dr. Burns is a certified facilitator for multiple FranklinCovey programs and VitalSmart’s Crucial Conversations soft skills program.
